Third Grade Homework Program:
Monday-Thursday: Reading
30 minutes (recommended by the school district) and complete reading calendar. The reading calendar will be in the student’s homework folder. Students will write the title and author of the book they read and an interesting, one-sentence comment about it.
Monday-Tuesday: Reading Comprehension
Students will complete an assignment that reinforces grammar skills taught in class.
Monday-Thursday: Math
Math homework is assigned nightly. It is not recommended to work too far ahead with the math homework, as some homework given later in the week may not have been covered in class.
Monday-Thursday: Storytelling Homework
Storytelling homework is given in lieu of writing homework. Storytelling is intended to get students thinking about ideas to write about when they're at school. Guidelines for Storytelling homework are in the homework packet; on Wednesday evenings, students are to write a letter to the Chef of the Week. Update 10/5/13: We will take a break from Storytelling Homework for awhile as we are doing cursive practice.
Monday: Poem of the Week
Students will be given a poem to memorize and recite on Friday. Students should decorate the space around the poem.
Wednesday-Thursday: Spelling
The assignment will change each month and will be explained on the homework cover sheet.
Friday: Occasional Corrections and Re-Do’s
The only homework students will be required to complete on the weekends will be corrections to tests and/or papers that the student did not complete correctly or left incomplete, or any long term project that is assigned. Most students will not have regular Friday homework unless they choose to get a head start on the next week's homework.
